OT: Sensory Processing Packages

Sensory processing describes a neurological process

It is how the brain and body work together to make sense of the environment we are in, as well as helping us to respond to the world in a way that means we can survive and thrive

Information, or “stimuli”, is received via tiny receptors all over the body. When this information is received, it is sent up to the brain to be organised as important or unimportant. This organisation process is what helps us know how to respond.

When information is important – we can respond quickly and effectively.

And when information is unimportant – we can usually filter this out and carry on.

When we have challenges in our sensory processing, this can sometimes result us taking in too much information and becoming easily overwhelmed by it, or we may not be registering enough information, leading us to miss things or not notice stimuli as easily as others do.

Sensory processing challenges can happen to any of us, at any age, and can always be made more severe at times of stress or illness for example.

Sensory processing challenges can stand alone, but can also be associated with other conditions, for example Autism, ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome.
